Слово politician по-английски означает нечто среднее между русскими словами «политик» и «политикан». Контекст, как правило, позволяет без особого труда решить, какое из этих русских слов в конкретном случае точнее. Труднее правильно перевести русское «политик». Чаще всего употребляется policy maker, иногда — political leader. Нейтральный вариант — political figure. А как же перевести слово «политикан»? Иногда оно звучит как political или petty politician, или just a politician. Если нужна эмоциональная окраска, можно употребить слово politico:

London's politicos can't wait to get their hands on each other. — Лондонским политиканам не терпится вцепиться друг в друга.

Political animal — «политическое животное», т. е. человек (как правило, политик) с сильно развитым политическим инстинктом. Между прочим, и Аристотель в своём трактате «Политика» писал: «Человек по природе своей — животное политическое».
